About Us

The Clinical Apheresis department in Pittsburgh and Chicago provides comprehensive procedures relevant to specialties such as:

  • Neurology
  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Nephrology
  • Rheumatology
  • Immunology
  • Cardiology

Our skilled team works with multiple medical facilities to treat a wide range of patient diseases, including those affecting infants to geriatric patients and everyone in between. This broad experience enables us to counsel our medical partners regarding conditions they may rarely encounter. Since we conduct 2,500 varied procedures each year, our expertise is invaluable for all of the facilities we support.

Like any true partnership, we’re there when you need us. That’s why we provide round-the-clock service to local hospitals for these comprehensive procedures:

  • Plasma exchange
  • Red cell exchange
  • Platelet depletion
  • White blood cell depletion
  • ECP (Extracorporeal Photopheresis)
  • Peripheral blood progenitor cell collection

Vitalant in Pittsburgh also supports cardiology specialties with lipid absorption column testing; they are the only area clinic with this capability. LDL apheresis is performed in the Therapeutic Hemapheresis outpatient department along with:

  • Transfusions of blood products
  • Infusions of Medications
  • Therapeutic Phlebotomies

Our Clinical Apheresis department is staffed by a director and supervisor/manager as well as highly skilled Hemapheresis RN specialists. They are complemented by our physician team who is actively involved in protocols and stem cell collections. In addition, our physicians are available for technical and medical consultations.

Because of the volume of procedures we conduct, we rely on Optia Spectra for fast and reliable results. We further assist our partners with the ability to move equipment between sites as required.

The Clinical Apheresis department is accredited by AABB and The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy.
